You’re already a great boss! You’re highly capable and are probably doing #allthethings right now.

You’re ready to hand them over and are willing to invest your time to train the right person.

You’re energised by the thought of having someone on your team – someone who’s 'in this' with you. It feels exciting to have someone who’ll understand your business and who you can share ideas with.

Who your next team member should be

You’re most likely looking for THE DOER. You’ve done it all up to this point and now it’s time to replace yourself.

You’re most likely looking for someone who’s junior (not an expert) – someone you can train or someone who’s willing to learn your way of doing things.

You’re not looking for someone who thinks they know better than you, at least not in the early days of working together. The thought of someone coming in and changing your established system from the outset would make you uncomfortable.

What to look for when hiring

The main characteristic to look for in your newbie is a strong willingness to learn.

You need someone who learns easily and is willing to follow instructions, while also looking for ways to improve.

You’ll need to work quite closely with this person, so you should look for a team member in the same time zone as you so you can communicate regularly. Perhaps even someone in the same city may be right for you.

Your ideal newbie needs to prefer to learn in a style that suits you. Give that some consideration – how do you like to communicate? What’s the most efficient way for you? This will be important to discuss and assess with any potential team member.

The right newbie will be energised and motivated by your willingness to share and regularly engage with them.

They’ll also need to be quite communicative and like reporting in and keeping in touch with you. Some people may not naturally enjoy this level of interaction or may interpret it as ‘micro management’ (which it's not, it's just a communication style).

a little insight into you

If you’re a ‘chatty’ person who gets an energy boost from liaising with others, it’s natural to want to hire someone similar to yourself.

Don't fall into that common mistake!

You need someone who is different to you, to act as a great complement to you.

You have the potential to drive the success of your new team member, or contribute to their lack of success. For example, when you’re a chatty boss, you may end up being the accidental distraction or the reason your new team member may go into overwhelm.

what to do next

OK... so now you’re starting to learn a bit more about yourself as a leader (at this unique stage of your business) and the type of person you need to hire.

To build further on that, you need to consider your future business and the role you want to play in it.

Right now, you might feel like you’re doing everything in your business (and maybe you are!). You might be dealing with all or any of the following:

  • Customer Generation (lead generation, social media, content creation, all the marketing)
  • Service Delivery (delivering the training, the product, or whatever awesome thing you do)
  • Customer Retention (thinking about new products or services, community management, customer service)
  • Technology (the website, the email system, etc)
  • All the administration & finance (invoicing, receipts, credit card payments, tax)
  • and more!

Your Next Step is

To imagine your future.

And more specifically, IMAGINE YOU in your FUTURE business.

The one where you have a team of A-Players surrounding you and supporting you.

Where you have the freedom and flexibility to work in a way that adds the most value to the business, while the rest is driven by your team.

  • Write down what YOU WILL be doing.
  • And write down all the things you WON'T be doing.

Describe your ideal role and start to list out all the things someone else can be doing.
