Attracting and retaining loyal team members is crucial for any small business owner.

Loyalty goes beyond simply showing up to work; it embodies a deeper commitment to the team and the business. Loyal employees take responsibility, appreciate your efforts, and genuinely support your business vision and goals.

Understanding Loyalty in the Workplace

Defining Loyalty for Your Team

To create a loyal team, begin by defining what loyalty means for you. Reflect on the behaviours and actions that epitomise loyalty in your organisation.

Here are a few examples of what a loyal team member could mean to you:

Proactive Support: Team members who step up during critical times, like assisting during personal emergencies or participating in training events.

Ownership and Communication: Employees who take ownership of their roles and keep you informed about their availability.

Appreciation: Team members who express gratitude for your contributions foster a culture of mutual respect.

Energy and Enthusiasm: Loyal employees engage enthusiastically in team-building activities and initiatives.

Honesty: Employees who approach you directly with concerns or misunderstandings, demonstrating their commitment to resolving issues.

Before attracting loyal team members, clarify your definition of loyalty. Understand how you want your employees to show up and behave. This foundational understanding will guide your hiring and retention strategies.

Attracting Loyal Employees: It Starts With You

You might assume that finding loyal employees is akin to searching for a needle in a haystack, but it’s more about you and the environment you create.

Here’s how you can cultivate a team culture that attracts and retains loyalty:

Create a Supportive Environment

Foster a workplace where employees feel valued and supported. This culture should permeate every aspect of your business, from job advertisements to interviews and onboarding processes. When employees feel aligned with your vision, they are more likely to stay.

Be Transparent

Transparency is essential in your hiring process. Be clear about what you need, what you expect, and what you can offer. Setting the right expectations from the start helps your team feel supported and prevents misunderstandings.

Lead by Example

Your actions should align with your words. The culture of your business is shaped by how you and your leaders behave. Embody the values you want to instill in your team. Show commitment, admit mistakes, and strive for improvement.

Maintain Consistency

Being consistent in your actions helps your team feel safe and secure. When employees can predict your behavior and know what to expect, they are more likely to remain loyal.

Show Appreciation

Recognise and acknowledge the hard work and effort of your team members. Whether it’s through timely payments, a simple thank-you note, or recognition during team meetings, showing appreciation can foster loyalty. Highlight both achievements and areas for growth, ensuring a balanced approach to feedback.

Prioritise Work-Life Balance

Respecting your employees’ personal lives and boundaries is crucial for retention. Ensure that workloads are manageable and communicate realistic expectations during the hiring process. Employees who feel their personal lives are respected are more likely to stay loyal.

The Two-Way Street of Loyalty

Loyalty is reciprocal. As leaders, we must commit to being the best versions of ourselves, admitting when we fall short, and striving for continuous improvement. This commitment builds trust and fosters a culture where loyalty can thrive.

Building a Community of Loyal Employees

Creating an environment that fosters loyalty takes time and effort, but the rewards are substantial. Not only will you build a successful business, but you’ll also cultivate an employment brand that attracts and retains talented individuals.

By implementing these insights into your business strategy, you’ll not only improve retention rates but also cultivate a vibrant, loyal workforce that supports your vision for years to come.

In the fast-paced world of entrepreneurship, efficiency is the key to success.

However, many businesses struggle with inefficiencies due to inadequate systems and processes which becomes evident when there are team changes.

Whether it’s a lack of standardised procedures, outdated technology, or poor communication channels, these inefficiencies can hinder productivity, waste valuable time and resources, and ultimately impede your business’s growth.

But don’t worry—there are steps you can take to streamline your business and overcome these challenges.

Inefficient systems and processes can show up in many ways within a business. You might notice repetitive manual tasks, delays in project completion, errors in data entry, or a general sense of chaos in day-to-day operations.

These symptoms not only impact your bottom line but also affect your team’s morale and overall effectiveness.

Recognising these signs is the first step toward making meaningful changes. To tackle inefficiencies head-on, consider implementing the following strategies:

Conduct a Comprehensive Audit:
Start by assessing your current systems and processes. Identify areas where bottlenecks occur, tasks are duplicated, or communication breaks down. This audit will provide valuable insights into the root causes of inefficiencies within your business.

Standardise Common Procedures:
Develop standardised procedures and workflows for key business processes. Clearly document each step, assign responsibilities, and establish timelines for completion. This approach ensures consistency and clarity across your organisation, minimises errors, and reduces wasted time.

Embrace Technology:
Invest in modern tools and technology to automate repetitive tasks, streamline workflows, and improve communication. From project management software to customer relationship management (CRM) systems, countless solutions are available to help optimise your business processes. Choose tools that best suit your needs and scale with your business.

Prioritise Training and Development:
Ensure that your team members have the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively utilise your systems and processes. Provide ongoing training and development opportunities to empower them to work more efficiently and confidently. Remember, a well-trained team is more capable of adapting to new tools and processes.

Foster a Culture of Continuous Improvement:
Encourage feedback from your team members and be open to suggestions for improvement. Regularly review and refine your systems and processes to adapt to changing needs and emerging technologies. By fostering a culture of continuous improvement, you’ll ensure that your business remains agile and responsive to evolving challenges.

Inefficiencies caused by inadequate systems and processes are common challenges faced by businesses of all sizes.

However, by taking proactive steps to streamline your operations, you can overcome these obstacles and position your business for long-term success.

If you’re craving support and want to explore how to make your business more efficient, book a Dream Team Discovery Call today, and we’ll discuss your business, and your unique challenges, and map out a plan to streamline your team, systems, and processes.

When it’s time to hire for your small business, it’s common to feel a bit daunted by the task ahead. The hiring and screening process certainly takes up valuable time, and of course, you want to get it right so you don’t have to deal with poor performance, having to fire someone, or finding yourself back at the drawing board in three months’ time.

With the changing business environment that most of my clients are experiencing in 2024, your time is even more precious. So, here I share the five essential ingredients to hiring success in 2024.

Why Knowing How to Hire Is Crucial

Hiring isn’t just about filling a position; it’s about finding the right fit for your business. When you know how to hire well, you gain a quiet confidence that allows you to hold high expectations and have necessary conversations without fear of rocking the boat. This confidence stems from knowing you can always find someone else who fits your needs if necessary.

A sustainable business relies on systems rather than people who are irreplaceable. When your business runs on systems, it continues smoothly even when team members come and go. This allows you to value your team without being overly attached to any individual, knowing that the right fit is always out there if needed.

5 Essential Tips to Make Hiring Easier for Your Small Business

1. Spend Time Getting Clear on What You Want

Begin by clearly defining what you want in a new hire. Complete the sentence: “I would be so delighted if the person did this… like that.”

Understanding your ideal candidate’s traits, skills, and behaviors helps create a focused vision. Equally important is identifying what you don’t want in an employee. This can be articulated by finishing the sentence: “I would hate it if….” This process not only clarifies your expectations but also ensures you avoid potential pitfalls.

2. Write a Unique Job Advertisement

Your job advert should reflect your business’s unique culture and working environment. Are you super fun? Include jokes in your advert. Are you highly professional and prefer formal communication? Use polished language.

By writing with feeling and personality, you stand out from the crowd and attract candidates who resonate with your style. This approach filters out applicants who might not be a good cultural fit, saving you time and effort in the long run.

3. Include a Question or Activity in the Application Process

At the end of your job advert, add a specific request for applicants. This could be recording a 60-second video, answering four key questions, or sending a portfolio link.

This step helps you quickly assess the applicants’ skills and enthusiasm, and it discourages those who aren’t genuinely interested or capable. It’s an effective way to screen for quality candidates early in the process.

4. Use the Hiring Process to Gather Information

The hiring process is not just about selecting the right candidate; it’s also an opportunity to gather valuable information about market trends, salary expectations, and candidate preferences regarding work hours and flexibility.

Stay flexible to meet the market demands while keeping your core requirements intact. This approach ensures you remain competitive and attractive to top talent.

5. Conduct a Good Interview

Learn how to conduct interviews that allow you to make confident hiring decisions. Prepare questions that assess both skills and cultural fit, and create an environment where candidates feel comfortable and can show their true selves.

When it comes time to decide, you’ll have gathered enough information to feel assured that the person you choose is the right fit for your team and your business needs.

I hope these tips provide valuable insights into making the hiring process for your small business easier and more effective. By spending time upfront to clarify your needs, crafting a compelling job advert, including a practical application step, gathering market information, and conducting thorough interviews, you’ll be well on your way to hiring success.

As a female entrepreneur leading a growing business, you wear many hats – from visionary leader to hands-on problem solver. One of the most challenging aspects of leadership can be delegating responsibilities effectively.

It’s not uncommon to feel a lack of confidence in entrusting tasks to others, fearing that they won’t be done correctly or up to your standards. But here’s the truth: learning to delegate is essential for scaling your business and freeing up your time to focus on growth generating activities.

A lack of confidence in delegating responsibilities can stem from a fear of losing control, concerns about a team members’ abilities, a reluctance to let go of tasks you’re familiar with, or a desire to be liked by your team, and not seen as mean. This mindset can often lead to micromanagement, overwhelm, avoidance and ultimately, hinder the growth of your business.

It’s essential to recognise that you can’t do it all alone – and that in order to grow, you need to delegate effectively!

To overcome resistance in delegating responsibilities to those on your team, consider implementing some of the following strategies:

Start Small

Begin by delegating small, low-risk tasks for you to build trust and confidence in your team members’ abilities. As they demonstrate competence and reliability, gradually increase the complexity and frequency of the tasks you delegate.

Provide Clear Instructions

When delegating tasks, be specific about what needs to be done, why it’s important, and when it needs to be completed. Provide clear instructions, guidelines, and resources to set your team members up for success.

Offer Support and Feedback

Empower your team members by offering support, guidance, and constructive feedback along the way. Agree to meet at particular time each week so that you can be available to answer questions, provide clarification, and offer assistance as needed.

Remember to celebrate their successes and use any mistakes as learning opportunities to grow and improve your systems and processes together.

Trust Your Team

Trust is the foundation of effective delegation.

Have faith in your team members’ abilities and resist the urge to micromanage.

Delegate with confidence, knowing that you’ve chosen capable individuals who are committed to the success of your business.

Focus on Results, Not Methods

Instead of dictating how tasks should be completed, focus on the desired outcomes and allow your team members the autonomy to determine the best approach where relevant. Encourage creativity and innovation, and trust that they will find solutions that align with the goals and values of your business.

Lead by Example

As a leader, it’s essential to model the behaviour you want to see in your team. By leading by example, you’ll inspire confidence and empower your team to take ownership of their work.

Remember:

Delegating responsibilities is a strategic decision that allows you to leverage the talents and abilities of your team to achieve greater results.

By starting small, providing clear instructions, offering support and feedback, trusting your team, focusing on results, and leading by example, you can overcome resistance in delegation and become a more empowered leader.

Together as a team you can achieve far more than you could ever could alone, because big dreams need great teams!

As female entrepreneurs, we often find ourselves navigating a myriad of challenges as we strive to build a successful and sustainable businesses.

Among these challenges, one that stands out as crucial to our well-being and productivity is mastering boundaries.

In this blog post, we’ll explore the significance of boundaries in creating a business and life that thrives, addressing common struggles, and offering actionable strategies.

The Importance of Boundaries:

Boundaries play a pivotal role in shaping the dynamics of our businesses and interactions with both team members and clients. They serve as guardrails, guiding us toward a path of balance, respect, and productivity. However, establishing and maintaining boundaries can be a daunting task, especially when met with resistance or uncertainty.

Many of us can relate to the feelings of overwhelm, stress, and guilt that arise when boundaries are lacking. Without clear guidelines in place, it’s easy to find yourself inundated with interruptions, distractions, and unrealistic expectations. These challenges not only impede your ability to focus and perform but also erode your well-being and overall ability to ‘switch off’.

The common boundary that is often lacking and needs clarification for most 6 and 7 figure female service-based businesses is around communication.

How to Address and Create Boundaries for Communication:

It’s essential to adopt a proactive approach to boundary setting and here are some actionable strategies and steps that you can take:

Clarify Expectations: Start by defining your expectations for communication, availability, and response times. Often the confusion comes from lack of explicit conversation and clarity. Clearly communicate your expectations to your team and make sure your clients know what your communication rules are to avoid misunderstandings and conflicts.

Establish Clear Communication Channels: Implement a Communication Framework that outlines when and how different channels should be used for communication. This helps streamline communication processes and minimises disruptions.

Set Time Boundaries: Determine specific work hours and times when you are available for communication and stick to them consistently. Encourage your team to do the same, fostering a culture of respect for personal time and boundaries.

Practice Kind Assertiveness: Don’t be afraid to assert your boundaries firmly but respectfully. Think of it as ‘reminding’ rather than ‘reprimanding’. Remember, boundaries are essential for your well-being and the health of your business. Hold yourself and others accountable for respecting them.

Seek Mutual Understanding: When setting boundaries, consider the perspectives and needs of others involved. Strive for mutual understanding and agreement to ensure that boundaries are fair, reasonable, and supportive for everyone.

By implementing these strategies you’ll be well on your way as a female entrepreneur to overcome common boundary-related challenges and to create a work environment that fosters productivity, respect, and well-being.

Mastering boundaries is not just a skill – it’s a cornerstone of a sustainable success for female entrepreneurs.

By setting clear expectations, establishing communication channels, and practicing assertiveness with empathy, you can create a work culture that prioritises balance, respect, and productivity.

As a female entrepreneur with a service-based business, you’re passionate about what you do. You’ve poured your heart and soul into building your company from the ground up, and your hard work has paid off with steady growth. However, along with success comes the inevitable challenge of managing an ever-expanding workload.

If you find yourself burning the midnight oil, feeling overwhelmed with tasks, and struggling to keep up with the demands of your business, you’re not alone. Many entrepreneurs face the same struggle, particularly when it comes to delegation.

The common reason many of my clients struggle with delegation is due to a lack of clear delegation strategies. It’s common to fall into the trap of trying to do everything yourself, fearing that no one else can do it as well as they can or wanting to be liked and trying not to ‘seem mean’.

However, this mindset not only leads to holding onto more work yourself, overwork and burnout which often also means your growth, profitability and scalability of your business is hindered.

So – what’s the solution?

Mastering the art of delegation!

Viewing this as a skill that you need to master knowing that it IS the secret to reclaiming your time, reducing stress, and allowing you AND your business to thrive.

Here are 7 actionable steps to follow to support you to develop a clear delegation strategies:

Identify Your Zone Of Genius – Start by looking in the mirror and identifying the tasks that only you can do. The jobs and tasks that truly fall within your unique skills, expertise, and vision for the business. These should be your top priority but it’s often that less important other tasks take up the time and your true genius or important tasks are de-prioritised.

Assess Your Team’s Strengths – Look around at your existing team and assess their skills, strengths, knowledge and capacity. You’ll then be able to assign tasks based on their abilities and delegating responsibilities that align with their expertise and interests OR you’ll find you have a hiring gap.

Clearly Define Expectations – When delegating tasks, you need to be specific about what needs to be done, why it’s important, and when it needs to be completed. You will also need to consider what instructions, training or guidance they’ll need to be set up for success.

Establish Accountability – Set up systems to track progress, monitor deadlines, and ensure accountability. This will include regular check-ins and feedback sessions will help keep everyone on track and address any issues or concerns along the way.

Foster a Culture of Trust… and actually trust your team. Trust is the foundation of effective delegation and to be able to trust and empower your team you need to know their decision making authority and what responsibility they truly do (or don’t!) hold. Once this is clear, empower your team members to make decisions and take ownership of their work. Give them the autonomy and support they need to succeed.

Learn to Let Go – As a leader, it is challenging to relinquish control and trust others to handle important tasks. However, learning to let go and delegate with confidence is essential for your own well-being and the growth of your business.

Continuously Review and Adjust – Delegation is not a one-time task – it’s an ongoing process that requires continuous evaluation and refinement. Regularly assess your delegation strategies, learn from successes and failures, and make adjustments as needed.

Overwork is a common challenge for female entrepreneurs, but it doesn’t have to be a permanent state.

By mastering the art of delegation, you can free up your time, reduce stress, and position your business for long-term success.

Let’s dive into a topic that’s on everyone’s minds – balance. It’s one of those words that can mean vastly different things to each of us. So, what does it mean to you?

For some of the incredible clients I’ve had the pleasure of working with, balance is all about the hours they work – or don’t work, for that matter.

It’s about:

Relishing those blissful Fridays off.

Clocking out in time for the school pick-up.

Thriving on a 20-hour workweek.

But for others, balance is more of a feeling:

It’s the joy of not having work constantly looming over your thoughts.

It’s the freedom to glance at your calendar and see pockets of time for family, hobbies, or just a bit of peace and quiet.

It’s that inner “calm” that comes from knowing you’re in control of your life.

Now, here’s where it gets exciting. When I work with my private clients in my 12-week coaching program, we make it a point to talk about and set an aspirational BALANCE goal. Even if that goal seems miles away, we use it as our guiding star, linking every decision, every hire, and every process to inch closer to turning that aspiration into a reality.

So, here’s the deal. If you’re reading this and you’re sensing that your life is a tad OUT of balance, if you’re itching to find that path toward living your aspirational life.

When we dive into this journey together, here’s what’s in store:

We’ll uncover your one-of-a-kind leadership style and then roll up our sleeves to build (or tweak!) your dream team into a crew that has you doing a happy dance daily because they’re your backbone on the road to achieving your aspirational balance goal.

We’ll implement simple yet remarkably effective changes to your team structure, allowing you to step back while still driving outstanding performance and results.

And here’s the best part – before you know it, your once-aspirational idea of balance will become your new normal.

With only 90 days left in 2023, let’s make a plan to set you up for an aspirational 2024! Let’s have a chat.

Finding an engaged and energetic employee can sometimes be like discovering a rare unicorn – a true A-player. These individuals bring an unmatched level of commitment, eagerness, and dedication to their roles, and to the team. They are the ones who willingly go above and beyond, working tirelessly to overcome challenges and continuously upskilling to excel in their positions. As a CEO and leader, you undoubtedly feel grateful to have such an exceptional team member on board.

However, there’s a critical reality that often goes unnoticed in having a high-performing employee – sustainability. As time passes, even the most energetic and dedicated individuals may find it challenging to maintain the same level of enthusiasm and output. They begin to question whether constantly pushing themselves to do everything and working tirelessly is truly in their best interest.

It is important to recognise and address the evolving needs of your employees. Everyone, including your star performers, eventually crave a sense of rhythm and the opportunity to work in their “zone of genius.” This desire for efficiency and expertise directly correlates with job satisfaction and engagement.

When your highly engaged employee reaches a certain point, their journey can take one of two paths:

Finding Their Flow: In this scenario, they successfully navigate the transition from intense enthusiasm to sustainable engagement. They identify their strengths, optimise their workflow, and continue to see your business as a mutually beneficial opportunity. This path leads to long-term productivity, job satisfaction, and loyalty.

Disengagement: On the other hand, if the signs of evolving needs and burnout go unnoticed, your star employee may start to disengage. They may lose inspiration and begin considering other career options, either consciously or unconsciously. This path can be subtle, and the signs may not always be evident to you.

The challenge here lies in detecting the signs of impending burnout and disengagement before they escalate. Some common indicators include:

Snippet of Frustration: Your once-positive employee starts displaying signs of frustration, even over minor issues.

Venting About Inefficiencies: They begin venting about inefficiencies or problems within the organisation that wouldn’t have bothered them previously.

Increased Discussion of Inefficiencies: Your employee becomes more vocal about inefficiencies in processes or workflows.

Excuses and Reduced Productivity: They start making more excuses and exhibit a noticeable decrease in their work output or speed.

The Power of Regular, Open Conversations

To prevent your exceptional team member from veering down the path of disengagement, it is imperative to have regular, open conversations with them.

Regular: These conversations should occur at least monthly and be scheduled in advance. Consistency is key to building trust and keeping a pulse on your employee’s evolving needs.

Open: An open conversation is one that encourages a two-sided exchange. Both parties should feel comfortable sharing their thoughts, concerns, and ideas. It’s not just about the manager giving feedback; it’s about listening and understanding the employee’s perspective.

Conversations: Emphasising the importance of dialogue here. A genuine conversation involves both speaking and listening. It’s not a one-way communication where instructions are simply handed down.

Transformation Through Conversations

When you commit to regular, open conversations, you’ll begin to notice a transformation in your working relationship and your business:

Improved Relationship: Your rapport with the employee will strengthen as trust deepens through open communication.

Enhanced Information: You’ll gain valuable insights into what’s working well, what challenges your employee is facing, and how to make improvements.

Greater Control: You’ll feel more in control of your business, your team, and your future as you proactively address issues and foster a culture of engagement.

By recognizing the signs of you ‘can-do’ employee’s evolving needs and embracing regular, open conversations, you can ensure that your star performers continue to shine. These conversations will not only help you retain exceptional talent but also create a workplace where everyone can find their rhythm, work in their zone of genius, and ultimately, enjoy their work. So, seize the opportunity to have those conversations, nurture your team, and watch your business thrive.

It is easy to think that things like a mission statement or values statement are only important in large corporates.

Words on a page or on a wall or drafted for marketing purposes to ultimately sell or promote more.

But, they are an incredibly important part of the backbone of your team.

Your VALUES.

Your MISSION.

Your WHY.

Your team needs to know all of this to be able to PERFORM to and exceed your high expectations.

These are the things that are important TO YOU and therefore, they become the guiding principles to help your team know…

How you want your clients to feel.

How you want the team to feel when they ‘open up their laptop’ to work with you.

And in turn… How to make micro decisions in their day to day including all those little (but oh so important) judgement calls they need to make.

A list of VALUES that describe the WAY you want people to FEEL and what is IMPORTANT will form the foundations of being able to hand decision making OVER to your team, as they’ll have the foundations to make the RIGHT decision each time.

One of my clients named this her Team Charter and it was a game changer for getting her out of all ‘the weeds’ and empowering her decide and act in a standarised way that represented her preferences and her business brand.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

You may have a value of OPENNESS – and that may give your team permission and guidance to share info and to not worry about ‘bothering people’ with extra info AND it will also give permission to ASK if they are feeling uncertain or don’t have the info they need.

You may have the value of CUSTOMER RETENTION OVER PROFIT – which could provide guidance if a refund request was escalating or if someone was faced with a mistake they’d made which a client had noticed.

You may have the value of HEALTHY BOUNDARIES – which could provide clear guidance in relation to work /life blend, supporting your team to know how to act with last minute client request and form the basis of a SOP that ‘we schedule all emails to be sent between 8-6pm’ even if we are working outside of those ours

Is your team wandering blind in the woods?

>> GOALS <<

Love them or hate them, but without CLEAR individual goals for your team that link into your BIG BUSINESS goal >> you are sabotaging the success of your team.

As an entrepreneur it’s likely that you have “big goals” for yourself.

As a high achiever, this part comes naturally to you.

Even if it’s hidden amongst the fear of setting a goal too high and missing.

But the next part, of breaking that big goal down into individual goals for each person working with you is much harder.

In fact, most of my clients find this really hard.

Recently, I had the pleasure of presenting a workshop on OVERWHELM to a group of entrepreneurs and you know the first *hack* I shared to shift their brain out of overwhelm?

1️⃣ For them to clarify their business goals – to write it down, then

2️⃣ Break that big goal into chunks (called milestones or progress markers), then

3️⃣ Turn those milestones or progress markers into KPIs or activity trackers for their team

The benefit of working through this process is that it helps your brain clearly see what YOU and YOUR TEAM need to focus on which in turn parks the overwhelm and helps everyone to focus on ** progress **

The benefits of doing this are HUGE!

Imagine every single individual feeling empowered through the clarity of how they can measure their success…

And YOU feeling clear and confident that they are working on the right things.

Sounds good right?

So, if you want to get started on communicating (or maybe even re-setting) goals, start with answering this simple question:

“On the 31st December 2023 when I’m celebrating how successful my business has become, what am I celebrating having happened?”

Goal setting on both a business and individual level is one of my super powers so if you want intimate support to set, communicate and motivate your team towards your big goals, reach out to me and let’s have a chat on a Dream Team Discovery Call.
